Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation shows “The Biography of Things”

Cooperation with Liebscher photography class at the Offenbach University of Art and Design (HfG) and Curatorial Studies class at Goethe University and Städelschule Academy of Fine Arts in Frankfurt / Exhibition to run from 2 February 2018 to 27 April 2018 at The Cube, Eschborn / Press preview on Thursday, 1 February at 11 a.m. CET

The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation will be showing “The Biography of Things” at the Deutsche Börse headquarters, The Cube, in Eschborn from 2 February 2017 to 27 April 2018. The exhibition explores when and how photography turns things into agents and enables new realities to emerge. “The Biography of Things” is a cooperation between the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, the Liebscher photography class at the Offenbach University of Art and Design (HfG), and students in Curatorial Studies at Goethe University/Städelschule in Frankfurt/Main.

What can we learn about things in the world when we look at the world of things? We are surrounded by objects everywhere in our day-to-day life. They are not only part of our environment but also an indication of what we are. They provide information on how we perceive our environment and wish to be perceived ourselves. “The Biography of Things” is dedicated to the subject of how the biography of things changes when these relationships are staged and recorded in artistic debate. The camera takes on an intermediary role – as a telescope with a view into the world of things that appear subjected to their own laws and that test our perception.

Joint project

At the initiative of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, students in Frankfurt University’s Master of Arts in Curatorial Studies programme curated an exhibition with photographic works of the Professor Liebscher class at the HfG Offenbach. The aim of the joint collaboration was to give both groups of students practical experience in realising an exhibition. Over a two-semester period, a total of 26 students developed the concept with great enthusiasm. The project was headed by Anne-Marie Beckmann from the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, Stefanie Heraeus from Curatorial Studies, and Martin Liebscher from the Offenbach University of Art and Design (HfG). The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation supported the project as part of its promotion of young talent. The cooperation with the HfG has been in place since 2010, with joint presentation of the annual HfG Photo Advancement Award.

Some 80 works by 15 HfG students will be shown in The Cube’s exhibition spaces. These will be complemented by a comprehensive selection of works from the Art Collection Deutsche Börse that also reflect the theme. Artists presenting their works include Jessica Backhaus, Anna and Bernhard Blume, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Geert Goiris, Chantal Michel, Ricarda Roggan and Erwin Wurm, who also explore the biography of things. A temporary exhibition project with works by five HfG artists will also be installed in the exterior space of the C level at Hauptwache in Frankfurt city centre from 12 February to 5 March 2018 to complement the exhibition at The Cube. A catalogue will be published for the exhibition.

The HfG artists showing their works in “The Biography of Things” are: Zani Arkadina, Janine Bächle, Jennifer Bannert, Laura Brichta, Urs Tilman Daun, Béla Feldberg, Annika Grabold, Dennis Haustein, Johannes Lenzgeiger, Felicitas von Lutzau, Nico Anthony Mason, Malte Sänger, Robert Schittko, Jochen Stierberger and Rudi Weissbeck.
