Market value

Market value

The value of a security at a particular point in time. Market values are a result of the process of price determination (either via a trading system or a broker).

Depending on the type of security involved, the market value is expressed either as a unit quotation or a percentage quotation.

The market values of stocks and options are published by the stock exchange as unit quotations (i. e. in currency units per share). The market values of bonds and future contracts are expressed as percent quotations (i. e. as a percentage of the nominal value).

market value = nominal value x price/100

The market value of a security is used as the basis for tax valuation.
