The legal frameworks for IoT are fragmented and in some areas outdated. If business intend to sell their IoT-devices globally it is challenging for them to identify all relevant laws and properly reflect them in the device. This is in particular true as various new laws and amendments to existing laws are underway and, once enacted, will have an impact on IoT devices. Jennifer Johnson, Yan Luo and Moritz Hüsch (partners in Covington’s Washington, Beijing and Frankfurt office) will provide you with an update on the recent legislative developments in the USA, China and European Union.

We are pleased to have the following speakers join our discussion:

Jennifer Johnson (Partner, Covington & Burling in Washington, DC) serves as co-chair of Covington’s global and multi-disciplinary Internet of Things (IoT) Initiative and is specialized in communications, media and technology matters. She has more than two decades of experience advising clients in the communications, media and technology sectors, and has served as a co-chair for these practices for more than 15 years.

Yan Luo (Partner, Covington & Burling in Beijing) chairs Covington’s membership in two working groups of China's National Information Security Standardization Technical Committee (“TC260”), serves as an expert in China’s standard-setting group for Artificial Intelligence and Ethics and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/Asia) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

Dr. Moritz Hüsch (Partner, Covington & Burling in Frankfurt) is co-chair of Covington's Internet of Things (IoT) group and is regularly listed as one of the best lawyers in the areas of IT and data protection in Germany. His practice focuses on complex technology- and data-driven licensing deals and cooperations, outsourcing, commercial contracts, e-commerce, m-commerce, privacy and cybersecurity, as well as contracts with respect to IoT, AV, and big data.
